2024 B-2: ‘Be proud of your cultural heritage’ – Osun monarch tells corps members

The Òràngún of Òkè-Ìlá, Oba Adédòkún Òmònìyì Abólarín has inspired the 2024 Batch B Stream II Corps Members to appreciate the nation’s cultural diversity and be proud of their cultural heritage.

Delivering an inspiring lecture on the Yoruba culture at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede on Tuesday, Oba Adédòkún, an accomplished lawyer and academic, shared insights from his extensive background in law, political science, and international relations.

He commended the Corps Members for their commitment to national service and emphasised the importance of cultural diversity and unity within Nigeria. He spoke on the need for Nigerians to overcome doubts and embrace new challenges, urging the youths to play an active role in rebranding and rebuilding the nation.

Speaking on the topic “Who are the Yorubas?” The Oba delved into the rich history of the Yoruba people, highlighting their origins from Ile Ife and the cultural practices that define their identity. He encouraged non-Yoruba Corps Members to learn and adopt certain Yoruba traditions to ease their integration into Osun State. Oba Adédòkún emphasized that Yoruba culture is not static but dynamic, encouraging the Corps Members to appreciate and participate in these traditions during their service year.

Drawing from his experiences across various regions of Nigeria, Oba Adédòkún illustrated the importance of cultural exchange and mutual respect. He highlighted the economic contributions of the Yoruba people, particularly in farming, art and trade, and emphasised how these practices have historically fostered unity and development.

In his closing remarks, the Oba urged Corps members to “behave like Romans when in Rome,” advising them to adapt to their new environment and immerse themselves in the local Yoruba culture.

Earlier, the State Coordinator, Mr Agbor Ndoma Obim, who was represented by the Camp Director, Mr Lawal Taofeek, welcomed the Monarch to the Camp and thanked him for honouring the Scheme’s invitation to come and deliver the traditional lecture.

According to him, the traditional lecture is to ensure the cultural immersion and proper integration of the NYSC Members in the State of their deployment.
