Ex-NYSC director urges corps members to be agents of positive change

Mrs. Regina Iluebbey, a former Deputy Director NYSC and one time State Coordinator of NYSC Osun State, delivered a motivational speech to the 2024 Batch B Stream 2 Corps Members at the Permanent Orientation Camp in Ede, Osun State today.

Mrs. Iluebbey began her speech by expressing her joy at the smooth conduct of activities at the camp and underscored the critical role of self-motivation in achieving success. She urged Corps Members to first seek motivation from within before looking to external sources, reminding them that the service year should be a period of remarkable growth, beginning with the three-week Orientation camp.

Addressing the importance of safety and security, Mrs. Iluebbey provided essential guidelines for a successful and safe service year. She advised Corps Members to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary movements, always keeping someone informed of their whereabouts. She also emphasized the need for humility and respect towards the cultures, beliefs, and traditions of the communities they will serve, cautioning them against displaying expensive lifestyles or engaging in behaviors that might attract undue attention.

In her call to action, Mrs. Iluebbey encouraged Corps Members to be agents of positive change. She advised them to choose good company and avoid individuals with questionable characters, while also ensuring they do not attract unnecessary attention. Furthermore, she warned them to be mindful of their activities on social media, particularly when commenting on sensitive political and controversial matters. Following these guidelines, she said, would ensure a smooth and fulfilling service year for all.

Mrs. Iluebbey highlighted the significance of maintaining a positive attitude throughout the service year, stating that one’s attitude reflects their personality and urged the Corps Members to maintain a positive attitude throughout their service year. A positive outlook, she explained, would not only help them succeed during NYSC but also pave the way for a bright future. She encouraged them to use this year as an opportunity to reflect on their life goals and consider the path they would like to follow after completing the service.

On health matters, Mrs. Iluebbey advised Corps Members to be health-conscious, taking medications when necessary and informing their Local Government Inspector of any persistent health issues. She also encouraged them to remain prayerful throughout their service year and to participate in the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program to acquire new skills that could provide additional income.

Looking ahead to life after NYSC, Mrs. Iluebbey acknowledged that while some Corps Members may already have job opportunities waiting for them, others might be planning to travel abroad, and some may not have clear plans yet. Regardless of their situation, she stressed the importance of making plans ahead of time, with self-reliance being a crucial first step. She urged them to take proactive measures toward their future and to embrace opportunities for growth and independence.

In conclusion, Mrs. Iluebbey advised the Corps Members not to shy away from menial jobs or small businesses while waiting for their dream jobs. She encouraged them to be resourceful and take up opportunities for personal and financial growth during this critical transition period.

The State Coordinator, Mr Agbor Ndoma Obim, in his address welcomed Mrs Iluebbey describing her visit as an ‘homecoming’ having served in the State in different capacities before her transfer to the NDHQ. According to him, the reception accorded her by the staff is a testament to her legacy in the State.

He implored the Corps Members to pay attention to the words of the Scheme’s stalwart and continue to comport themselves worthily.
