Corruption is responsible for poverty in Nigeria – OYACA Chairperson

 

The Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency Chairperson Hon. Justice Eni Esan (Retired) has linked the proliferating poverty rate in Nigeria to the high-level of corruption in the land stating that no nation can prosper with corruption as it is a weapon fashioned against progress and development.

The Chairperson who was represented by a team led by the Executive Secretary of the Agency, I. O. Tijani, Esq, made this known while delivering the Anti-Corruption lecture at the Oyo State, NYSC Permanent Orientation camp, Iseyin. He defined corruption as the abuse of power for personal gain such as diverting public funds for private use, bribery, and sexual gratification.

He mentioned that the agency was established in 2019 through the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency Law. According to him, corruption is a severe obstacle to development in Nigeria. He said that the citizens of Nigeria are wallowing in poverty because of the adverse effects of corruption. This points to the fact that it has to be battled.
The Executive Secretary also said If corruption is left unchecked, it can lead to political instability, as taxes that have been earmarked for important projects are wasted because of this cankerworm. He urged Corps members to be agent of change and collaborate with the agency by saying something whenever they see something.

He equally mentioned that petitions can be submitted to any of the offices of the Anti-Corruption Agency in Oyo State, or through their website.
