The Team of Immigration officers led by the Assistant Comptroller of Immigration PRO, Zone A, Headquarters , Adebola Ademulegun has enlightened corps members of the 2024 Batch ‘B’ Stream 2 undergoing orientation course at the Iyana Ipaja camp on the importance of pursuing legal migration channels and the dangers of irregular travel.

Adebola Ademulegun pointed out the difference between legal and illegal migration, noting that while “Japa”—the popular term for emigrating abroad—can be a viable option, it must be done lawfully. “Japa is allowed, but do it the right way,” he advised. He warned against irregular travel saying it attracts consequences such as exploitation, trafficking, and even death.

Assistant Comptroller Ibironke Gideon, another member of the team, explained further on the consequences of Document Fraud, underscored the importance of securing passports through official means. She advised corps members to avoid intermediaries and ensure that all personal details are correctly entered. “Get your passport yourself to ensure all details are accurate,” she said. She equally warned that any falsification or irregularities could lead to future complications and legal repercussions.

Hannah Chatterton from the British Deputy High Commission added her voice and explained the process on visa applications, cautioned corps members against using unauthorized third-party agents.“Don’t pay anyone to process your visa; you can do it yourself”. Chatterson advised prospective migrants to verify educational institutions and employers directly through official UK websites to avoid falling victim to fraud.

Matthew Spengler, a Fraud Prevention Manager at the U.S. Consulate, reinforced these warnings in relation to student visa applications, Spengler disclosed that many agents mislead applicants with false documents and recycled information, which can result in severe penalties, including lifetime bans from entering the U.S. “Rely on credible sources and be truthful in all submissions,” he advised.

All the experts echoed a common message: follow legal procedures, maintain honesty in your applications and avoid the risks posed by third-party agents when considering international migration.
