The National Youth Service Corps Lagos State Coordinator, Mrs Christiana Salmwang has joined her counterparts nation wide to flag off the Tree Planting campaign in Lagos.The event was held at Onigbongbo LCDA, under Ikeja 2 Local Government Area.
In her opening remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator, stated that the program was a nation wide project launched August this year by the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General, YD Ahmed and was flagged off by the Minister of Youth Development Dr Jamila Bio Ibrahim in Nasarawa Orientation Camp, Keffi. This is in line with Federal Government agenda to plant 25 million trees by 2030 nationwide.
Salmwang added that the essence of planting trees is to protect the environment against desertification ,erosion and reduce the effect of climate change.
She said trees also serve as wind breakers whenever there is a windstorm, beautify the environment and serve mankind in various ways. She urged the corps members to strive to plant at least a tree during their service year and nurture it to growth.
The Corps members were encouraged to embark on tree planting as a CDS project .In addition, the SC used the occasion to advise the corps members against negative use of social media .
She expressed that issues are not resolved on social media and enjoined them to follow the right channel of communication to process their grievances if any.
The Assistant Director, Community Development Service, Mrs Grace Oso, earlier in her welcome address used the forum to enlighten the corps members on the importance of Tree Planting.
She emphasised that Tree planting symbolises growth and ecological consciousness. She added that tree planting could also regulate the climate and charged corps members to ensure they engage in tree planting for the benefit of the environment.
In the same vein, the Education Secretary of the Onigbongbo Local Government, Comrade Amosu, Akeem, Abolore who was represented by Mr Afolabi Awobuyide, HOS, Planning, Research and Statistics department stated that importance of tree planting is one of the necessity of life to protect the environment for humanity.He further expressed the beautification role of trees whereby they provide a beautiful landscape and that the oxygen produced by the existence of trees contribute to the prevention of diseases.
Thereafter tree seedlings were symbolically planted by the State Coordinator, and other dignitaries.
