Corps Members of the 2024 Batch B Stream II have been encouraged to support the fight against corruption in a lecture delivered on Thursday by Assistant Superintendent Mary Okebukola from the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
She emphasized the role of Nigerian youths in combating corruption, noting that their involvement is crucial to the country’s progress.
During the lecture, Okebukola defined corruption as the abuse of public office for personal gain. She explained that corrupt practices arise from greed, societal loopholes, and distorted values, all of which have far-reaching consequences for the nation. Corruption, she added, impacts every aspect of national life, causing widespread harm.
The ICPC representative highlighted the unique position of youths in this struggle, stressing that they are among the most affected by corruption’s damaging effects.
Okebukola outlined several ways Corps Members can contribute in the fight against corruption, including demanding government accountability, reporting incidents of corruption, educating others, and refusing to partake in unethical practices.
Okebukola noted that since its establishment on September 29, 2003, the ICPC has made significant strides in its mandate to prevent corruption and enforce anti-corruption laws.
“The commission remains committed to motivating Nigerian youths to take active ownership in the fight against corruption,” she said.
