What Corps Members Should Do to Receive State, Presidential Honours Awards

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Honour Awards are given to Corps Members who have distinguished themselves through their various assignments during their one-year national service.

It should be noted that excellent services rendered can be either tangible or intangible but must be relevant to the needs of the host community and the nation at large.

In conferring the award, Corps Members are usually assessed on all the cardinal activities of the service year, namely: Orientation, Primary Assignment, and Community Development Service. Additionally, qualities such as discipline, teamwork, special contributions, self-confidence, mobilization capabilities, and emotional poise are also considered.

Types of awards include the Chairman’s Merit Award, State Honour Award, and Presidential Honour Award.

The selection process covers Corps Members’ performance in the four cardinal programs of the NYSC scheme.

The Zonal/Local Government Inspector collates data on projects and services rendered in the Local Government Area, which is processed by the secretariat and sent to the NYSC State Honours Award Committee for final assessment. The state committee deliberates and selects the best two from each batch, which are then forwarded to the Directorate Headquarters to compete with others at the national level. Winners at the state level are honored by the State Government.

To this end, you must be a good ambassador of the scheme and undertake projects during your service year before you can be recommended for an award.
