Passing out is exciting — and a little scary. Here are seven practical moves to make the transition easier.
1. Start job hunting three months before POP
Don't wait for your certificate to start applying. Many employers accept applications from corps members who are about to pass out.
2. Ask your PPA about staying on
If you did good work, your PPA may retain you or recommend you elsewhere. Ask your supervisor directly — and ask for a reference letter either way.
3. Turn your service year into a strong CV
List your PPA role, CDS projects and SAED skills with real results. "Taught maths to 120 SS2 students; class pass rate improved" is far stronger than "Teacher".
4. Build your LinkedIn
Add your service year, a clear photo and a short headline. Connect with people you met in camp, at your PPA and in CDS.
5. Use your SAED skill
If you learnt a skill in SAED, consider starting small — even as a side business alongside a job. Look out for NYSC and government empowerment programmes that support ex-corps members with training and funding.
6. Learn a high-demand skill
Short online courses in data analysis, digital marketing, product design, project management or software development can make a big difference to your job options.
7. Plan your next qualification
Thinking about a master's degree, a professional certification (like ICAN, CIPM or PMP) or studying abroad? Your certificate of national service is often required, so keep it safe and start researching early.
